Days Until Christmas

Count days to Christmas.

About the Days Until Christmas

Days remaining until 25 December. Counts to this year's Christmas, or next year's once the day has passed.

How to use it

  1. Open the calculator.
  2. Read the countdown.

The formula

The count is a subtraction between two dates, with one rule that catches people out: if 25 December has already passed this year, the target rolls to next year.

Days remaining = 25 December (this year or next) − today

Date arithmetic is done by converting both dates to a day number and subtracting, which sidesteps months of unequal length entirely. Leap years are handled by the same conversion — a year is a leap year if it divides by 4, except centuries, unless they divide by 400. That is why 1900 was not a leap year and 2000 was.

The same rule produces a pleasing pattern in the weekday. Christmas advances one weekday each year and two across a leap day, so it never falls on the same day twice running.

Worked examples

YearChristmas Day falls onNote
2026Friday
2027Saturdayadvances one day
2028Mondayleap year — skips Sunday
2029Tuesdayadvances one day again

The 2028 row shows the leap day at work. Christmas skips straight from Saturday to Monday, because the extra day in February pushes everything after it forward twice. The full cycle of weekday and leap-year combinations repeats every 28 years in the Gregorian calendar, with adjustments at those century boundaries.

Common mistakes

The civil calendar in general use since 1582, refining the Julian calendar's leap year rule.
Advent
The four Sundays preceding Christmas, and the start of the church year.

Common questions

How many days until Christmas?
The counter above works it out from today's date, rolling to next year automatically once 25 December has passed.
What day of the week is Christmas this year?
In 2026 it falls on a Friday. It advances one weekday each year and two across a leap year, so 2027 is a Saturday and 2028 a Monday.
Why does the weekday skip a day sometimes?
Because a leap year has 366 days, which is two more than a whole number of weeks. Every date after 29 February moves forward two weekdays instead of one.
What is the leap year rule exactly?
Divisible by 4 is a leap year, unless the year is a century, in which case it must also divide by 400. The refinement keeps the calendar aligned with the solar year.
How many weeks until Christmas?
Divide the day count by seven. The counter shows days, which is the more precise figure for planning around delivery deadlines.
Why is Christmas on 25 December?
The date was fixed by the fourth century. It has no scriptural basis and sits close to the winter solstice and to existing Roman midwinter festivals, which historians generally take as related.
When should I post gifts to arrive in time?
Carriers publish cut-off dates each year, typically mid-December for standard domestic post and considerably earlier for international. Working backward from the day count is the practical use of this page.
How many days are there in the Christmas season?
Twelve, running from Christmas Day to Epiphany on 6 January — the origin of the song and of Twelfth Night.
